Connecting Communities: The Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link Explained

A bold new vision is taking shape along Sydney’s iconic waterfront. The Parramatta to Sydney Foreshore Link is a 91-kilometre continuous walking and cycling path that will stretch from Parramatta Park to the Sydney Opera House and Royal Botanic Gardens, creating the city’s longest dedicated foreshore route for pedestrians and cyclists.

This exciting initiative will connect diverse communities and landscapes, offering a new way for locals, tourists, and families to experience Sydney’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and active lifestyle.

Whether it’s a weekend bike ride, a morning commute, or a leisurely stroll by the water, the Foreshore Link will provide safe, accessible, and scenic travel along some of the city’s most beloved shorelines.

Aboriginal appreciation

The route will also highlight Sydney’s rich Aboriginal culture, particularly Saltwater Country, by drawing attention to the traditional custodians of the land and deepening cultural connection to place through interpretive signage and design.

The link route also aims to promote healthy, sustainable travel, giving more people the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors while reducing reliance on cars.

While parts of the foreshore are already popular with walkers and riders, the goal is to connect and upgrade all 91km of the route to the same high standard.

The project is being delivered in stages, with early works already underway in the City of Canada Bay and City of Parramatta areas. These include new and upgraded shared paths, safer crossings, and enhanced links at locations such as Chiswick, Concord, Wentworth Point, and Rydalmere.

Notable recent improvements include a raised pedestrian and bike crossing on Brodie Street, which provides a vital link along the Parramatta Valley Cycleway. More early delivery projects are in planning, with community consultation shaping future works.

From late 2024, site investigations and surveys will take place to inform the next stages. Over time, missing links will be completed and older infrastructure upgraded, subject to planning and funding.

Beyond boosting active transport, the Foreshore Link will also stimulate local economies by drawing more visitors to shops, cafes, parks, and cultural sites along the route. Most importantly, it will make Sydney’s world-famous harbour and river foreshores more accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone.
