After almost four years away from print, 2037 Magazine is back to tell the stories of Glebe

In a suburb with as much history, character and independent spirit as Glebe, it seems only fitting that there should be a magazine dedicated to telling its stories. That was the idea behind 2037 Magazine, Neighbourhood Media’s local publication for Glebe.

First launched in 2021 as part of a growing network of hyper-local magazines, 2037 was created to celebrate the people, businesses, places and stories that make Glebe unique. Now, after almost four years away from print, it is coming back.

The 2037 Magazine was born from a bigger idea: that local communities deserve media of their own.

Neighbourhood Media is a small, independent local media company, founded in 2020 with a simple belief: every neighbourhood has stories worth telling. From the beginning, the company has put local communities at the centre of its publishing, producing free magazines focused on individual suburbs and postcodes rather than a broad metropolitan audience.

The result is media that is local by design – celebrating the people, businesses, places and stories that make each suburb distinctive.

The magazines are free for readers and supported by local businesses that advertise within them. Those businesses aren't simply advertisers; they are an essential part of making independent local publishing possible.

Glebe has always been a natural fit.

With its historic terraces, village atmosphere, creative community and collection of independent businesses, Glebe has never been short of stories. Some are well known; others have been hiding in plain sight for generations.

Early issues explored the characters and places that give Glebe its distinctive personality, with the inaugural magazine featuring artist and musician Reg Mombassa on the cover, alongside stories about the suburb’s architecture, history, food, arts and local businesses.

Then, in October 2022, 2037 Magazine was paused. Like so many small businesses, Neighbourhood Media had been profoundly affected by COVID, while local businesses – the very businesses that support the magazines through advertising – were facing enormous uncertainty and an increasingly difficult market.

As a very small, independent publishing company, Neighbourhood Media couldn't simply absorb those changes. The magazines rely on the support of local advertisers, and when those businesses were doing it tough, continuing to publish every title wasn't viable.

So 2037 took a break.

But the idea behind the magazine never went away.

While the Glebe print edition was paused, Neighbourhood Media continued to grow. New postcode-based magazines were launched across Sydney, online local storytelling expanded, and the company continued developing its approach to community publishing.

The philosophy remained the same: local media should be about local people. It should celebrate the businesses residents actually visit, introduce readers to interesting people in their neighbourhood, uncover the history beneath familiar streets and provide a place to discover what’s happening close to home.

Now, almost four years after the last issue, the time feels right to bring 2037 back. A lot has changed in Glebe since October 2022. New businesses have opened, familiar favourites have evolved and there are plenty of new stories waiting to be told.

The returning 2037 Magazine is therefore more than a relaunch. It is the next chapter of a publication built around the belief that neighbourhoods deserve their own media – and that independent local businesses deserve to be part of the conversation.

Most importantly, the magazine is made possible by the community it serves.

Every local advertiser who gets behind 2037 helps keep independent local publishing alive. Every story about a Glebe business, artist, venue, community group or local character adds another piece to the story of the suburb.

Glebe has endless stories to tell – and 2037 Magazine is back to make sure locals don’t miss them.
