Inner West Council has reappointed long-standing Mayor, Darcy Byrne, for another term.
Known for his passionate advocacy for progressive causes and community engagement, newly re-elected Mayor, Darcy Byrne, has played a key role in shaping the vibrant, culturally diverse region that spans Newtown, Marrickville, Leichhardt, and other suburbs which make up the Inner West Council area.
With a background in public policy and a dedication to social justice, and promoting Arts and Entertainment, he has focused on making the Inner West a more inclusive and sustainable place to live.
Mayor Byrne is a strong advocate for environmental initiatives. Under his leadership, the Inner West Council has made strides toward sustainability, including introducing one of Sydney’s most ambitious waste reduction and recycling programs, and committing to becoming carbon neutral.
A champion of arts and culture, Mayor Byrne has been instrumental in launching the Inner West’s first Pride Centre at Newtown Town Hall, providing a dedicated space for the LGBTQIA+ community. He has also worked to revitalise local heritage, pushing for the protection of historic landmarks and the promotion of local artists and cultural events.
Mayor Byrne’s vision for the Inner West is one that blends progressive values with practical, community-focused initiatives. His new priorities for the Inner West community are:
Strong financial management including no special rate rises for the next 4 years
Delivering new planning controls to address the housing affordability and supply crisis
Renovating the iconic Leichhardt Oval
Upgrading and rebuilding Leichhardt Pool
Creating a state-of-the-art indoor sports centre at Tempe
Opening new special entertainment precincts throughout the main streets of the Inner West
Making White Bay Power Station a permanent, world-class arts and cultural venue
