Mosman locals are seriously spoiled for choice when it comes to cooling off, with some of Sydney's best swimming spots right on their doorstep. From the beautiful beaches of Balmoral to secluded harbour coves and spectacular seawater pools, there's no shortage of places to make a splash this summer.

Feeling a little trepidatious about throwing yourself into Sydney Harbour? Don't worry, there are plenty of netted and enclosed swimming spots for a little extra peace of mind.

So, grab your swimmers! Here's your handy guide to seven of the best swimming spots in and around Mosman.

Balmoral Beach & Baths (2km from Mosman)

☀️ The Quintessential Mosman Swim 📍 The Esplanade, Balmoral 💰 Free

Balmoral's sheltered harbour waters and historic baths make it one of Mosman's (and Sydney's) most popular swimming spots. The enclosed swimming area is protected by a shark-resistant net, while the surrounding foreshore has plenty of space for picnics and post-swim lounging. With toilets, change rooms, cafés and restaurants all nearby, it's dangerously easy for a quick dip to turn into an entire afternoon.

Chinamans Beach (2km from Mosman)

☀️ Calm Water & Room To Move 📍 McLean Crescent, Mosman 💰 Free

Hidden away in Middle Harbour, Chinamans Beach is one of Mosman's quieter swimming spots. This 250m stretch of sand beside Rosherville Reserve offers calm harbour waters, with plenty of grass and shade when it's time to dry off. Toilets, change rooms and a playground add to the appeal, particularly if you're settling in for a few hours. One thing to note before diving in: there's no swimming enclosure here, so you'll be sharing the open water.

Clifton Gardens Beach (3km from Mosman)

☀️ Make A Day Of It 📍 Morella Road, Mosman 💰 Free

There's plenty on offer at Clifton Gardens, both in and out of the water. This popular Mosman swimming spot features a large grassy reserve, playground, jetty, toilets and surrounding walking tracks, making it an easy place to settle in for the day. The netted swimming enclosure adds a little extra peace of mind once it's time to hit the water, and Mosman Council has also installed a shark-bite emergency kit. Clifton Gardens is also a popular snorkelling spot and home to an endangered species of seahorse.

Sirius Cove Beach (3.5km from Mosman)

☀️ Escape The Crowds 📍 Curlew Camp Road, Mosman 💰 Free

Tucked away in Little Sirius Cove, this secluded Sydney Harbour beach feels surprisingly removed from the busier swimming spots nearby. There's a playground and picnic facilities on shore, making it an easy place to linger after getting out of the water. There's no netted swimming enclosure, but Mosman Council has installed a shark-bite emergency kit at Sirius Cove.

Cobblers Beach (4km from Mosman)

☀️ A Swim Without Swimmers 📍 Middle Head, Mosman 💰 Free

There is one important thing we should note first up here: Cobblers Beach is officially clothing-optional! It's also un-patrolled, so check conditions before heading into the water. Follow the walking track down from Middle Head and suburban Mosman quickly disappears behind you. This secluded harbour beach sits within Sydney Harbour National Park, surrounded by native bushland and spectacular views towards Dobroyd Head.

Obelisk Beach (4km from Mosman)

☀️ Seclusion With A View 📍 Middle Head, Mosman 💰 Free

Another of Mosman's hidden swimming spots, Obelisk Beach is reached on foot from Middle Head and rewards walkers with a small, secluded stretch of sand surrounded by native bushland. Like its neighbour Cobblers, this is an officially clothing-optional beach and unpatrolled, so check conditions before swimming!

Maccallum Seawater Pool (5km from Mosman)

☀️ Harbour Swims, Spectacular Views 📍 Milson Road, Cremorne Point 💰 Free

For those who prefer swimming laps without venturing into open harbour waters, Maccallum Seawater Pool is hard to beat. This 33m seawater pool has one rather spectacular advantage: its position right on the Cremorne Point foreshore. A timber deck wraps around the pool, with uninterrupted views across Sydney Harbour. It's filled with harbour water and cleaned weekly, so check for scheduled closures before making the trip.

Before You Dive In

Before heading out for a swim in Mosman, it's worth checking the latest water-quality information through NSW Beachwatch. Mosman Council monitors several popular local swimming spots, including Balmoral Baths, Edwards Beach, Chinamans Beach and Clifton Gardens.

And remember, while netted swimming areas offer an additional layer of protection, it's still important to follow local signage, check conditions and supervise children closely.
